The current U.S. Customs offices for Addison Airport are located in a hangar on the airport, but the U.S Customs and Border Protection told the Town in May 2015 that this location did not meet the standards for space, ramp access, and security. In the summer of 2017, Addison City Council approved the site at 4553 Jimmy Doolittle as the future home for a U.S. Customs free-standing building and in April 2018 made the decision to construct a two-story building that would also house the Addison Airport offices on the second floor.
In December 2018, Council approved the issuance of $7 million in Certificates of Obligation (CO) for the construction of the combined Customs and Airport offices facility. These bonds are self-supporting and the obligation will be funded through airport operating revenues. In August 2019, Council awarded a contract in the amount of $6,223,949 to JC Commercial for the construction of the project.
Addison Airport held an official groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 for the new building which is scheduled to open in early 2021.
